Since most of you are probably wondering about the provenance of my name, let me get that out of the way first… My father named me after Beethoven’s eponymous overture, which itself was composed as incidental music for a tragedy written by Goethe in 1788 about a Dutch aristocrat; Lamoral Count of Egmont.
I, on the other hand, was born in Brazil in the mid-nineteen-eighties, the eldest of four siblings. My earliest memories are those of walking around my paternal grandmother’s home and marveling at the shapes and smells that lay within its walls. Those early years, surrounded by the tall white studio spaces filled with tools and artwork —not to mention her gregarious personality— all had a deep impact on the way I see the world around me.
Since childhood I have always been captivated by the shapes and sights that surround me, so much so that I can’t remember ever having fallen asleep on a long car journey. Instead, I often have my forehead pressed up against the window, enthralled by the scenery rushing past, savoring each detail until it all disappears just as quickly as it came. This recurring theme of time and space, coupled with mans’ limited ability to share that which he sees and considers to be of value at any one particular point in time, are the driving forces behind my photography.
